Mid-Autumn Festival, A Traditional Folk Festival in China

The Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, Spring Festival, Tomb-sweeping Festival and Dragon-boat Festival are known as four biggest traditional Chinese festivals. Influenced by Chinese culture, Mid-Autumn Festival is also a traditional festival among local Chinese in some countries in East Asia and Southeast Asia. There are folk activities during Mid-Autumn Festival, such as enjoying the full moon, having mooncakes, playing lanterns since ancient times.




In south area of Fujian Province, a folk activity called ”Bo Bing” is quite popular. Many people are shouting in excitement around a big bowl and you can hear the clanging of dice everywhere. “Bo Bing” game requires 6 dices and a red china bowl. Game players throw the dices by turn and then their pips are counted. It’s just like a lucky draw and different pips you get stand for different prize you win. The one who wins the most is always entitled as “Zhuangyuan”. People believe that “Zhuangyuan” will have good luck the whole year.
